Skin Care Basics
If you treat your skin right it will look its
best. Here are a few tips to make sure you are taking care of you
skin properly. You must determine your skin type and use
appropriate products. Proper skin care consists of four basic
steps:
·
Step One- Cleanse
Find a cleanser that
works for your skin type and that you respond well to. Use it ever
evening. The best cleansers tend to be in cream form, for dry skin,
or liquid form, for oily skin. Bar soaps are not recommended for
the face. Use warm water. If makeup is removed properly in the
evening a splash of water should be all that is needed in the
morning.
·
Step Two- Exfoliate
This is an important
step that is often overlooked. If skin is exfoliated regularly,
usually on a weekly basis, you will see a difference. Dead skin
cells will dull your complexion. Regular exfoliation will brighten
the complexion. Look for a scrub with small grain that works
gently. Exfoliation can be done through microdermabrasion, chemical
peels and retinoids, such as Retin-A or Renova. Retinoids
exfoliate as well as add collagen to the skin. This can be
important for aging skin.
·
Step Three- Moisturize
All types of skin,
even oily skin, need added moisture, but you do need to be careful
not to over moisturize as it will clog pores. Most people will
moisturize at least once a day. Individuals with dry skin may
choose to do it in the morning and evening. Some people choose to
add an additional moisturizer around the sensitive eye area. This
area is especially prone to wrinkling because it has less fatty
tissue. Because of sensitivity for some people it does require a
different moisturizer than the one used on your face.
·
Step 4- Sunscreen
Sunscreen may be the
most important part of any skin care regime. The sun ages the skin
and is the number one cause of wrinkles. It should be worn ever
day. It is a good idea to purchase a separate moisturizer for
daytime that includes sunscreen. You should not use moisturizer at
night that includes sunscreen however. Mexoryl and Helioplex are
two ingredients to look for when choosing a sunscreen.
